Rudraksha malas, made from the seeds of the Rudraksha tree (Elaeocarpus ganitrus), hold immense spiritual significance in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other spiritual practices. These beads are cherished for their unique spiritual, health, and metaphysical properties. The term “Rudraksha” itself is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Rudra” (a name for Lord Shiva) and “Aksha” (eye), symbolizing the tears of Shiva according to Hindu mythology.

Rudraksha beads are believed to embody the potent energies of Shiva, representing his tears of compassion for humanity. They are traditionally used in malas (prayer beads) for japa meditation—reciting mantras to aid concentration, spiritual connection, and inner peace. Each bead has facets or “mukhis” that are believed to have specific properties and influences, ranging from one to twenty-one mukhis, each with its own significance and benefits.

Malas are used all over by Buddhists around the world especially they are used in Tibet, Nepal, and India. You will always see the monks as well as lay people using them while walking around the stupas or temples or monasteries. A Mala is usually used for prostrations, counting mantras, and so on. It is worn on the left wrist while not in use.
